When the water taxi is genuinely worth it

Arrival with heavy luggage at night

You land at Marco Polo at 22:00 with three large suitcases and a hotel near the Arsenale. Vaporetto + walk = exhausting. Water taxi to the hotel water-gate = €110, but you arrive sane.

A group of four splitting the fare

Four travellers from Marco Polo to a central hotel: €175 ÷ 4 = €44 each. The Alilaguna boat is €18 each (€72 total) but takes 75 minutes. Taxi saves a full hour, four luggage-handling problems and €30 difference each.

Wedding, anniversary, special moment

Riding a Riva motoscafo down the Grand Canal at sunset is one of Venice's great experiences. Not cheap (€90 short hop), but the taxi captain will choose the best route and even slow down for photos.

When the water taxi is NOT worth it

A solo traveller with a backpack arriving by daylight. The vaporetto + a 10-minute walk costs €9.50.
Sightseeing the Grand Canal. The vaporetto Line 1 is slow on purpose — the taxi will rush you through.
Murano + Burano day trips. The vaporetto runs every 20 minutes and the journey is half the experience.
Late dinner returns. Line N runs until 04:30 — no need for a €90 taxi.

Vaporetto vs. water taxi FAQ

Official water taxi operators (Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia, Venezia Taxi) have ranks at Marco Polo arrivals, Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia, San Marco and major hotels. Book online for the airport in advance; for short hops just queue at a rank.

Not required. The price is fixed and includes service. A small tip (€5 on a €100 ride) is appreciated but not expected — Italian custom does not include the heavy tipping seen elsewhere.

Yes — licensed Venetian water taxis are professional and insured. Avoid unmarked boats offering rides at the airport (occasional scam). Stick to the official ranks with branded boats.
